CHAPTER SIX

A Choice for Carter

Carter found his way to one of the indoor pools for a swim. He loved the water so much, but his skin burned easier than most people thought it did. He was always asked why he was so dark and handsome but never had a tan, and the simple truth was that his skin hurt after just 30 minutes, even if he didn't look like a boiled crab to the average person.

He relaxed. He enjoyed his swim as his mind flashing back to Sterling's face and body during his laps in the water. He was learning to appreciate that perpetual reminder of him and suddenly found himself yearning to find him. He had been gone long enough, after all, they were on a ship in the middle of the Atlantic, he couldn't handle that much business.

“I had a feeling I would find you here.” Carter heard as he pulled himself up from the water.

"You would have found me eventually the ship isn't that large." He swung his narrow frame around to sit on the concrete tile edge and removed the tiny bug-eyed swim goggles. "Is everything all right now?"

"For the most part; we can go back to enjoying ourselves now; the sun is out, and the storm off in the distance is pretty cool looking."

"And later? I checked the calendar; the moon is at its fullest tonight. What are we going to do about that?” Carter was focused on Sterling and oblivious to nearby eavesdroppers.

"Well, I'm sure the moon will look amazing on the water." His eyes darted quickly sideways to alert Carter.

"Right. And I'm starving. How about some lunch?" Carter wasn't joking, he was hungry, but he followed Sterling down below decks instead up to the restaurants without asking why. Down near the engines, they were met by a Crew member who would certainly send them back, Carter assumed. Instead, he held his arm out. "This way Mr. Addington."

Down a narrow passage and another short set of stairs, they were led to a small vacant storage room without windows. The ecru paint was chipping from the walls and rivulets of rust led away from the rivets on the walls showing how the salty environment was oxidizing ship. Lingering in the air was a heavy chill. Feeling cold, Carter realized they were below the waterline.

“This should do. Thank you for being with this.” The crewmen in the fine-pressed white uniform nodded and stepped out of the room.

“Well, there you have it. Do you like it?” Sterling held out his arm to Carter, showing off the luxuriant accommodation.

“Who is he? What is this?”

“This is my plan for tonight. When I learned the storm would add more days to our trip, I had to make a few calls.” Sterling explained.

“And he was?”

“Just someone sympathetic to our condition and likely related to, or a friend to one of our kind.”

“I see. So, this is our night?” Carter approached, reaching to put his hands around Sterling’s neck.

“I could not have you here with me tonight.
